Two Villages in One
Glenview is not easy to categorize. On one side of town you have the quiet, well-kept neighborhoods that have defined the village since the early 20th century — streets lined with mature oaks, traditional homes, and the kind of settled character that takes generations to build. On the other, you have one of the most ambitious residential redevelopment projects in Illinois history. When the Glenview Naval Air Station closed in 1995 after more than five decades of operation, it left behind 1,100 acres of federal land in the middle of a thriving suburb. What replaced it — The Glen Town Center — brought custom homes, walkable streets, and an entirely new architectural vocabulary to Glenview that had never existed there before.
That contrast defines Glenview in a way that is unlike any other community we serve. It is a village where a 1940s colonial and a 2005 custom build can sit within half a mile of each other, and where the right gutter system looks completely different depending on which street you are standing on.
Matching the Metal to the Home
Most gutter contractors offer one or two materials and apply them everywhere. That approach works fine on a standard subdivision home. It falls apart in a community like Glenview, where the architectural range is genuinely wide and the homeowners who care about their properties are paying close attention to every exterior detail.
Natural copper belongs on Glenview’s older homes. The colonials, ranches, and traditional two-story houses in the established neighborhoods around Wagner Farm and Jackman Park were built with materials meant to last. Copper gutters honor that intention. The warm tone reads as completely natural against brick and stone, and the patina that develops over decades only deepens the character of a home that already has it. No other gutter material does that.
For the newer custom properties in The Glen Town Center, the calculus is different. Those homes were designed with clean rooflines and deliberate material selections. Zinc is the metal that belongs there. Its matte gray patina is quiet and architectural rather than decorative, and it suits the transitional and contemporary character of The Glen’s best properties without competing with them. Freedom gray copper is the other option for homeowners who want that same settled, already-aged appearance from the moment installation is complete, backed by the century-long performance of a copper core.
What the North Branch Does to a Gutter System
The West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River winds through Glenview, and the corridor of mature trees that follows it extends into neighborhoods throughout the village. That canopy is part of what makes Glenview beautiful. It is also one of the most demanding environments a gutter system will face. Leaves, seed pods, twigs, and organic debris accumulate quickly, and the moisture that comes with sustained tree cover accelerates corrosion in materials that were not built to handle it.
Copper and zinc are. Both metals develop protective patinas that seal the surface against the organic acids and sustained moisture that eat through painted aluminum over time. Neither one requires painting, sealing, or any surface treatment over its entire lifespan. In a village where the trees are a selling point, that durability is not a luxury — it is the practical choice.
The Installation Standard That Premium Homes Require
A copper or zinc gutter system is only as good as the installation behind it. Both metals require specific tools, precise soldering technique, and an understanding of how the material moves and expands through Illinois freeze-thaw cycles. Sections that are soldered rather than caulked. Hangers spaced and set for snow load. Fabrication that accounts for the exact dimensions of each roofline rather than forcing standard sections to fit.
This is the only work we do at North Shore Copper Gutters, and every installation carries our lifetime workmanship warranty. We serve Glenview and the surrounding communities including Northbrook and Deerfield.
